Presentation Overview:
Software mass customization is a powerful business model as well as a powerful engineering model that enables software organizations to efficiently engineer variations of their software products. This seminar will provide an overview, practical insights, and a demonstration of new advances in software mass customization.
Software mass customization focuses on the means of efficiently producing and maintaining multiple similar software products, exploiting what they have in common and managing what varies among them. This is analogous to what is practiced in the automotive industry, where the focus is on creating a single production line, out of which many customized but similar variations of a car model are produced.
Real world success stories of software mass customization come from diverse areas such as mobile phones, e-business software, computer printers, diesel engines, telecom networks, enterprise software, cars, ships, and airplanes. However, companies who have reported great success with software mass customization have also reported great challenges and costs in making the move to that model. Adoption times are often measured in terms of years and the costs in millions of dollars.
Using one of computer science's most powerful principles -- separation of concerns -- new advances in software mass customization technology enable organizations to more quickly and more efficiently adopt a software mass customization business and engineering model. This technology works in conjunction with the existing tools and techniques, currently used for building one-of-a-kind software systems, so that mass customization is a straightforward extension to single system engineering.
About the Speaker:
Dr. Charles Krueger is the founder of Austin startup BigLever Software, one of the first companies to provide technology and services for software mass customization. He has worked in a diverse set of Austin companies over the past decade, transitioning advanced software engineering ideas, technologies, and techniques into commercial practice. Austin Software Improvement Network (A-SPIN)
SPIN (Software Process Improvement Network) is a forum for the free and open exchange of software process improvement ideas and experiences. The organization serves as a source of educational, scientific and practical information for its members, other SPIN organizations and the general software community. The Austin SPIN is affiliated with the Software Engineering Institute at Carnegie Mellon University, the Austin Software Council, the Software Quality Institute and currently has sister SPINs in several cities across the U.S.
SPIN Meeting Times: Tuesday Evenings, 6:30-9:00 p.m.
Meeting Location: Dell Parmer Campus, Parmer South 1 Building
(SPIN meets the third Tuesday evening of each month (excluding the month of June).
