Austin Software Improvement Network (A-SPIN)

SPIN (Software Process Improvement Network) is a forum for the free and open exchange of software process improvement ideas and experiences. The organization serves as a source of educational, scientific and practical information for its members, other SPIN organizations and the general software community. The Austin SPIN is affiliated with the Software Engineering Institute at Carnegie Mellon University, the Austin Software Council, the Software Quality Institute and currently has sister SPINs in several cities across the U.S.

Presentation Overview

Over the past several years an increasing number of organizations have been assessed at CMM Levels 4 or 5. This talk will start by presenting some of the unique practices observed in high maturity organizations, with special attention being paid to statistical control of process and quality. The talk with then describe the cultures that emerge in these organizations, with a focus on how maturity enables extraordinary levels of empowerment and why Indian organizations seem to achieve high maturity with greater ease than American organizations. The talk will then present the quantitative business results achieved by several high maturity organizations. The talk will end with a vision of high maturity capabilities that expands substantially beyond what was envisioned in the CMM.

About the Speaker

Dr. Curtis is Co-founder and Chief Scientist of TeraQuest, an Austin company that works with clients internationally to improve their software development capability. A former Director of the Software Process Program at the Software Engineering Institute (SEI), he led the project to produce the Capability Maturity Model from the process maturity framework developed by Watts Humphrey. He is the architect and primary author of the People CMM. He came to Austin in 1983 to help found the Human Interface Laboratory at MCC and later initiated the research on the software design process in MCC's Software Technology Program. Prior to MCC he established a world-wide software productivity and quality measurement system at ITT's Programming Technology Center, experimentally evaluated software development methods in GE's Space Division, and taught statistics at the University of Washington. He has published several books and over 100 technical articles.
