The Center for Lifelong Engineering Education (CLEE) and the Center for Transportation Research (CTR) at The University of Texas at Austin is pleased to offer you this Online seminar on Pavement Preservation.

Pavement preservation is a maintenance program that offers highway agencies an economical approach to sustaining roadways and extending life of service. Due to the lack of knowledge, training and research about pavement preservation in general, this maintenance strategy is currently being underutilized and overlooked as a viable alternative to rehabilitation and reconstruction. This online course, composed of the proceedings of the seminar conducted at The University of Texas at Austin (UT) on October 6-7, 2003, will offer a means for promoting awareness of pavement preservation as a feasible and practical maintenance strategy while providing training in preservation methods.

Introduction to Pavement Preservation

Roadway pavement preservation is a program focused on maintaining serviceable roadways in a cost-effective manner. If we can provide the right treatment at the right time, then pavement preservation offers a way to lengthen the service life of pavements and ultimately save money without rehabilitation or reconstruction of an existing road. The many benefits of such a program include increased return on investment, extended service life, improved customer satisfaction, expedited treatment turn around time, and increased productivity.

With proper pavement preservation, the service life of a roadway can exceed its initial design life and operate at a high level of user satisfaction. In terms of cost, there can be up to a 10 to 1 return on money spent on preservation versus rehabilitation or reconstruction; or rather, every $1 spent in preservation eliminates or delays spending $10 on rehabilitation or reconstruction later. With the idea of correcting a problem before it becomes a failure, pavement preservation programs need to focus on performing the right maintenance or construction operations at the right time on appropriate roads. Choosing a road that is in fair condition without structural damage is important, and then choosing the best, most cost-effective technique among the many choices is essential for proper life enhancement.

The faculty in charge of this seminar is Dr. Yetkin Yildirim. In addition to conducting many research projects in the area of pavement preservation, Dr. Yetkin Yildirim has taught pavement preservation courses at both the undergraduate and graduate level at the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Yildirim has also organized pavement preservation seminars with the Associated General Contractors, the Foundation for Pavement Preservation, and the Asphalt Emulsion Manufacturers Association. In addition, current research topics in pavement preservation conducted at UT include a study on crack sealing from which a training video has been produced and a field manual for crack sealing is currently underway. CEU's and Certification

Participants who successfully complete all seminar requirements within the designated two week period will be awarded 1.2 Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

Seminar requirements are: read the syllabus, watch all videos, take the quiz, complete the evaluation form.

Participants will also be awarded a certificate of completion from The University of Texas at Austin.

Certificates and CEU letters will be mailed out within two weeks of completion of the course.

Attendance Policy
A 90% attendance rate is required in order to earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and certificates of completion.

Cancellation Policy
A full refund, less a $100.00 processing fee, will be given for all cancellations or transfers if notification is received on or before two weeks prior to the beginning of the course. Refunds will not be given for cancellations received after this date. Substitutions may be made anytime prior to the first day of class. The CLEE programs are subject to cancellation if too few people enroll, in which case a full refund will be given.
