Course Overview

The course is designed for planners, architects, engineers, developers and decision makers in the field of construction who want to become familiar with the principles of green building. One of the main objectives of this course is to provide the participants with an in-depth insight into the principles of sustainable design. One of the core contents is to learn how buildings can provide high-comfort with a minimal use of fossil fuels. In this introductory course, the participants will learn about the fundamentals of sustainable design and will be able to relate this knowledge to their work as well as their future explorations in the field.

Lecture Topics

Session 1: Challenges – Energy consumption and global warming
Session 2: Solutions – Sustainable design standards – LEED
Session 3: Comfort – Human comfort and control of indoor climate
Session 4: Site – Principles of sustainable urban planning, transportation and landscape design
Session 5: Technologies – Advanced solutions, use of environmental energies and smart materials
Session 6: Analysis – Life cycle assessment, energy modeling tools
Session 7: Case studies for sustainable communities
Session 8: Case studies for sustainable buildings

At the end of the course the participants will:

  • Have gained a thorough understanding of the principles of sustainable design.

  • Be able to evaluate existing developments/buildings and their potential for sustainable retrofits.

  • Know how to apply the principles of sustainable design to new buildings and communities.

Attendance Policy
A 90% attendance rate is required in order to earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and certificates of completion.

Cancellation Policy
A full refund, less a $100.00 processing fee, will be given for all cancellations or transfers if notification is received on or before two weeks prior to the beginning of the course. Refunds will not be given for cancellations received after this date. Substitutions may be made anytime prior to the first day of class. The CLEE programs are subject to cancellation if too few people enroll, in which case a full refund will be given.
