Overview

All students interested in applying for graduate study in Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin must meet the admission requirements established by the University’s Office of Graduate Studies and the Cockrell School of Engineering. Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year institution.

Admission requirements for all applicants:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Conditional admission may be possible with less than a 3.0 GPA
  • Completion of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) within the past five years
  • A minimum of 18 months of industry experience

Additional requirement for international applicants:

  • TOEFL score
  • Please note that the F1 student visa is not applicable.  International students must be employed in the U.S. and have an employer-sponsored visa.

Applications are received and reviewed on a year-round basis. Admission decisions are made as application files are completed. Early application is strongly encouraged.

No decision to admit will be made until all required materials have been received. Applications completed after the deadline may be subject to additional fees due to rush book orders and late registration. These expenses will be passed on to students and are payable at enrollment.

Admissions decisions are made on the basis of a holistic review of all completed applications, including transcripts, GRE scores, letters of recommendation, statement of purpose, and industry experience.

Please note: that you will use a pull-down table to select the program to which you are applying. The Executive Engineering codes use the identifier ‘Option III’, and are listed following the full-time program equivalents for ECE-Software Engineering.

(3) Letters of Recommendation
You may list recommenders via the online application. Recommenders will automatically be contacted and a letter of recommendation requested.

Approximately 24 hours AFTER you have submitted your application you will be able to upload the following documents:

College transcripts - uploaded transcripts are considered unofficial but are sufficient for application review.

Please note: upon admission you will be required to submit official transcripts.

Official transcripts from each university or senior college attended. If you are a former UT undergraduate, transcripts will be requested for you automatically.

Test Scores

Important to Note:

  • Former UT graduate students:
    Please submit an Application to Change Graduate Major with $10 fee and transcript request form to the UT Registrar’s Office.
  • Permanent residents:
    Please fill out the application for U.S. Students. No TOEFL is required.
  • Please submit your application as early in the process as possible
    Recommenders will not be contacted and a letter of recommendation requested, until you submit your application.

Check Your Application Status
Once your application has been received by UT, you will receive an email confirmation containing your Electronic Identification (EID) and a password to check the status.
