Since the early 1980s, Pike Powers has been a driving force behind Austin’s rise as a leading technology center. In a recent article, he was described as "the leading economic development rainmaker for Central Texas, a catalytic force in helping build the region’s high-tech foundation." He played a key role in attracting high tech facilities to Austin, including the MCC computer research consortium, 3M research operations, Sematech chip research consortium, Applied Materials’ largest plant, and two Samsung computer chip plants. In addition, he has played a strategic role in creation of the Texas Enterprise Fund and the Texas Emerging Technology Fund.
