ERCOT Energized: the good, the bad, and the ugly of the new Texas Nodal Market Design

Dr. Shams Siddiqi

Dr. Shams Siddiqi is President of Crescent Power, Inc., a consulting firm that assists energy companies with designing and operating in competitive market structures, contracting power purchase/sale agreements, structuring financial products to manage risk, and providing expert testimony on these topics. Dr. Siddiqi is a key designer of the retail deregulated ERCOT market. He designed most of the advanced features of the Texas Nodal Market including the Day-Ahead Market with Congestion Revenue Rights, energy and Ancillary Service co-optimization, Texas Two-Step mitigation in Security Constrained Economic Dispatch, Constraint Competitiveness Test, and mitigation methods in the various ERCOT-run markets. He managed the power portfolio and negotiated contracts for the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) for over 12 years. Prior to joining the LCRA, he worked as Research Associate at the Center for Energy Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Siddiqi received the B. S. degree from Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology in 1988 and the M. S. and Ph. D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 1989 and 1993, respectively.
