ERCOT Energized: the good, the bad, and the ugly of the new Texas Nodal Market Design

Dr. Parviz M. Adib

Parviz M. Adib, Director - joined APX, Inc. in October 2007 where he is involved in consulting services covering both power market and environmental market activities. In addition to an expert regarding the restructured electricity market within the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) power region, Dr. Adib is following market design evolution in all electricity markets in the United States as well as those around the world. Furthermore, Dr. Adib follows the development of environmental commodities, such as Renewable Energy Credit and carbon offsets, in an increasingly carbon limitation era.

Previously, Dr. Adib worked at the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) for twenty one years. He served in different management positions including the Director of the Electric Division, the first Competitive Issues Division, and finally the first Market Oversight Division (MOD) where he performed the duties of the ERCOT Market Monitor for six years before retiring in September 2007. During 2000-07 period, Dr. Adib and his staff in MOD played a key role in design of electricity market in ERCOT, monitored market activities, and advised the Commission on emerging issues facing the electric industry and market rules that govern the operation of competitive electricity markets in ERCOT.

Earlier, Dr. Adib taught graduate and undergraduate courses at The University of Texas at Austin and worked as a Research Associate in the Bureau of Business Research at UT. Prior to joining the University, Dr. Adib was employed as a Material Scheduling and Forecasting Supervisor by Industrial Heavy Equipment Product Company (HEPCO), a branch of International Harvester, Inc.

Dr. Adib completed his Ph.D. in Economics in December 1984 and has worked with energy markets for more than 25 years. He was the former Chairman of the Energy Intermarket Surveillance Group (EISG), an organization that includes Market Monitoring Units (MMUs) in various electricity markets in the United States and all around world.
