Managing the "Technology Vesting Spectrum": Market Failure, Player, or Leader?
Businesses that provide technical, engineering, or consulting services to the marketplace excel, “get by”, or fail in direct relationship to the degree of “technology vesting” that they enjoy. Firms that have (merely) capability to provide such services have an opportunity to participate in the marketplace, albeit with risk and margins that are likely below-average. Firms that have credentials in providing such services are more likely to be market players, and they will more likely achieve at least adequate profitability. Firms that enjoy technology ownership, however, command premium marketplace positioning, with the attendant greater profit potential and, importantly, sustainability. The discussion will review how businesses can move along the technology vesting spectrum to maximize profitability and sustainability, and case studies will be presented to reinforce the concepts.

Vice President, Process Technology Services
Mr. Blacksmith is responsible for the Process Technology Services business group within the Austin General Engineering office of URS Corporation. This business includes process engineering/design (primarily involving large air pollution control systems), process optimization, risk management, environmental impact assessment, public involvement/technical communications, and other services for a variety of client sectors. These client sectors include the power, petroleum, chemical, pipeline, manufacturing and other industries, as well as government clients, including the Department of Defense and the Department of Energy. In addition, Mr. Blacksmith serves on the Industry Advisory Board for the Texas A&M Mechanical Engineering Department and the Project Management Advisory Board for the Texas A&M College of Engineering.
