1. When does the program begin and when should I apply?
Applications are accepted year round and are processed as they are received. Decisions are made as quickly as possible. Early application is strongly encouraged.
Advanced Manufacturing – The program admits students in August. Our deadline for receiving applications for the August start is July 1.
Circuit Design – The program begins with an orientation session in January. Our deadline for receiving applications is December 1.
Engineering Management – The program admits students both in January and August. Our deadline for receiving applications for the January start is December 1 and for the August start the deadline is July 1.
Software Engineering - The program admits students both in January and August. Our deadline for receiving applications for the January start is December 1 and for the August start the deadline is July 1.
2. Can coursework from other universities be transferred into the Engineering Master’s Degree Programs?
No. Students are required to complete all credit hours indicated in the degree requirements. We are unable to accept transfer credits in the Engineering Masters Degree Programs.
3. How much time should I expect to spend outside of class time?
The typical Engineering Master’s Degree Program student spends a minimum of 6 to 15 hours a week outside of class time in preparation. This time varies based on projects and exam schedule.
4. Are the majority of students sponsored by their companies?
Although many of the students receive full or partial support from the organizations which sponsor them, a number of students pay the entire cost of the program from their own funds. Company financial support is not required for admittance into the program.
5. Are scholarships available?
We do not have any scholarships available. Financial aid information can be requested from our office.
6. Do I have to attend orientation?
All students are required to attend a one-day orientation session prior to the start of classes. The session includes an orientation to the campus, facilities, and expectations of graduate-level work for students in the program. Orientation is mandatory.
7. Will I need an Internet connection while I am a student?
Students are strongly encouraged to invest in a high-speed Internet connection or other Internet Service Provider while enrolled in the program. A student can purchase an inexpensive UT connection, or IF Account, through the UT Connect System.
8. Does the program have a career placement program?
Yes. The Cockrell School of Engineering has a career placement center (ECAC), which assists students in finding opportunities. Additionally, the Engineering Master’s Degree Programs have an alumni association where by opportunities are posted on the web site as well as activities and events are held in order for alum to network.
9. Are these programs accredited UT Master’s degree programs?
Yes. The Engineering Master’s Degree Programs (Advanced Manufacturing, Circuit Design, Engineering Management and Software Engineering) have been reviewed and approved by UT’s Graduate Assembly (the University’s legislative body), the Board of Regents of The University of Texas System, The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, and the Southern Association of Colleges and Universities.
10. Is there financial assistance available?
The Engineering Master’s Programs are unable to provide direct financial assistance to students. However, students who are enrolled in the programs are eligible for Federal Loans through the Office of Student Financial Services. Please note that International Students are not eligible for any financial assistance from SFS. Please contact SFS by calling (512) 475-6200 for more information regarding these loans. Additionally, students are encouraged to check with a lending institution of their choice for other possible student loans.
11. I am a Veteran, is this program approved for VA benefits?
Yes. Veterans Administration benefits are available to eligible students enrolled in the Engineering Master’s Programs through the Office of the Registrar at The University of Texas at Austin. Please call (512) 475-7540 for more information. General information regarding Veterans Administration benefits is available at the VA web sites: http://www.vamuskogee.net (for UT Austin students) or http://www.va.gov (for other applicants).
Please note that the Hinson-Hazelwood benefits are not available for students enrolled in the Engineering Master’s Program because the program is self-supporting and does not receive State funding.
12. Why is the program so expensive?
The Engineering Master’s Programs are not subsidized; that is, the program does not receive state-supported funds from The University.
The student programs fees are the only financial means by which the program supports its operation.
