Blackboard for Engineering Students

Blackboard is the University of Texas at Austin online coursware tool that provides 24/7 access to course materials, threaded discussions, group chats, grades, and eResources

Accessing Blackboard

  • Login to Blackboard at: http://courses.utexas.edu
  • Enter your UT-EID and password.
  • Select the course you want to enter under the My Courses heading, or click the Courses tab and select the course you want to enter.

NOTES:

  • A Blackboard course shell is created for every course offered at UT (every course that has a unique number).
  • Individual professors may or may not put content into the Blackboard course shells.
  • The staff will create a Blackboard course for general information at file-sharing.

Features within a Blackboard Course

Each instructor can enable or disable various features within Blackboard, so you may not see all features in all courses.

Content areas include:

  • Announcements
  • Information
  • Faculty Information
  • Documents
  • Assignments – this is where surveys and assessments will most often appear
  • External links

Instructors can create folders and sub-folders within any content area.

Communication tools include:

  • E-mail

Career Services

Upon enrollment into one of the Engineering Master’s Programs students are able to utilize the Cockrell School of Engineering's Career Assistance Center (ECAC). Alumni are eligible to continue using the Center’s services for up to one year after graduation. (For additional information regarding ECAC, please view their web site located at http://www.engr.utexas.edu/ecac/)

The Programs also have an alumni association program web site and jobs are posted on the site when students and alumni submit information to the Program office. Many students who are in the program network and find other opportunities via this method. There are various venues for looking for other jobs opportunities while in the program.

International Students

The University of Texas at Austin International Office provides a variety of services and programs for international students. They are located on Dean Keeton Blvd and University Avenue (in the old Student Health Center). Their phone number is 512-471-1211.

The University Health Center has a Student Health Insurance Program, which is mandatory for all international students. An international student who has an acceptable level of coverage under a mandatory employee insurance plan, including University employee insurance, or a mandatory government-sponsored plan, may request a waiver of the fee at the time of registration. However, if a student does not have insurance, he/she must obtain and pay for his/her insurance through the University’s Health Insurance Program. Please contact the International Office at the phone number listed above for more information. International students who participate in the Engineering Master’s Program must have health insurance prior to the registration of courses. Please note that the Program fees do not pay for international student health insurance. It is the responsibility of the international student to obtain appropriate and necessary insurance.

Recreational Sports

The University Recreational Sports Center is located on San Jacinto and 21st Street. Students enrolled in the program are eligible to use the Rec. Sports Center. For more information regarding the use of the facilities, please check out their web site located at http://www.utrecsports.org/

UT Tickets for Various Activities

The University of Texas at Austin has a number of different activities that occur on the campus throughout the year. These activities include football, baseball, basketball and other athletic events, theatre and dance performances as well as opera and symphony performances. If you are interested in purchasing tickets to these various activities, please contact the Athletics Ticket Office at 412-471-3333; or, for tickets to any performing arts function please call 512-471-1444.

Sexual harassment and students with disabilities

Prohibition of Sexual Harassment

The University of Texas at Austin strictly prohibits discrimination or harassment of students based on gender, race and sexual orientation. The University publishes guidelines and policies that prohibit discrimination in these three areas. The Office of the Dean of Students has primary responsibility for responding to questions about and receiving complaints of discrimination or harassment of students. If you experience problems associated with harassment, please contact this office immediately by calling 512-471-1201.

Students with Disabilities

The University of Texas at Austin has a written policy which states that students with disabilities will be provided with academic accommodations. The purpose of academic accommodations is to assure that there is equal access to and the opportunity to benefit from all educational programs at UT. It is the student’s responsibility to identify himself/herself to Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) and to provide documentation of a disability.

Strict documentation guidelines exist for different types of disabilities. Information on documentation guidelines for cognitive disabilities can be found on the SSD web page within the "Information for Faculty and Staff" section at http://deanofstudents.utexas.edu/ssd/ If you require additional information about SSD, please contact the Office of the Dean of Students directly by calling 512-471-1201. The program does adhere to policies associated with students with disabilities.

Student ID and EID

The Engineering Master’s Programs provide each student with a picture identification card that enables the use of many university facilities and services. Additionally, discounts are available from various community businesses upon showing your UT student ID. Replacement cost for lost ID’s is $10. If you lose your ID card, you will be responsible for paying the replacement fee. Please be sure to notify the Program staff if you lose your ID.

When students receive their ID card they will also be assigned a high-assurance electronic ID (EID). This ID enables students to log into various university resources (computer labs, BlackBoard, student records, etc.) and is vital to students enrolled in the Programs.

Transcripts

Students can obtain a copy of his or her transcript by using the telephone, ordering in person or by a third party order.

To Order by Telephone: Call (512) 475-7689, Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm. The cost is $10.00 per transcript; payment must be made using MasterCard or Discover. Please have the credit card number and expiration date available when you call, in addition to your dates of attendance at the University.

To Order in Person: Visit the Office of the Registrar, Main Building room 1. Transcripts are considered confidential; therefore, a photo ID must be presented when you order. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm. The cost is $10.00 per transcript, payable by cash, check, MasterCard or Discover. You must provide a complete address if the transcript is to be mailed. Third party orders: You may authorize a third party to order or pick up your official transcript. The authorized person must provide the following:

A letter addressed to the University of Texas at Austin that includes:

  • The date of the request,
  • Your full name,
  • Your student identification number,
  • Your signature,
  • Your date of birth
  • Your dates of attendance,
  • The full name of the person authorized to complete the transaction,
  • The number of transcripts requested, and
  • Instructions on what to do with the transcript(s) once the order is processed.

Your proxy must provide a photo ID that identifies the third party as the person named in the letter of authorization and $10.00 for each transcript requested.

Letters of authorization may be brought to the office by the authorized party or faxed in advance to (512) 475-7515.

All payments for transcripts must be made to The University of Texas at Austin and must be in US funds. If non-US funds are sent, the request will be returned to the sender unanswered. Official transcripts are NOT issued for students with financial holds (bars). For more information on clearing bars, contact the Office of Student Accounting at (512) 475-7777. Students with bars may request an unofficial transcript, which lists all coursework but does not include the University seal, the signature of the registrar, or the name of the University. The cost of unofficial transcripts is $10.00 per copy; they are available the following business day. An unofficial transcript will be released only to the student requesting it; it cannot be released to a third party. Please note that most test scores, such as SAT and GRE results are not printed on transcripts but may be obtained from the testing center.
