Admission decisions are made as application files are completed. Early application is strongly encouraged. No decision to admit will be made until all required materials have been received. Applications completed after the deadline may be subject to additional fees due to rush book orders and late registration. These expenses will be passed on to students and are payable at enrollment.

Admissions decisions are made on the basis of a holistic review of all completed applications, including transcripts, GRE scores, letters of recommendation, statement of purpose, and industry experience

Applicant Requirements

All applicants

  • A bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, natural sciences or a related field.
  • A 3.0 gpa
  • Have a minimum of 18 months of industry experience.
  • A current GRE score is required (A GMAT may also be submitted in lieu of the GRE for applicants to the Engineering Management program).

International students only

  • Have a minimum total Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 550 (paper test) or 213 (computer assisted test). Scores may not be over two years old per ETS records. (If you are an International student who graduated with a bachelor’s degree from a US accredited university, the TOEFL test score is not required).

Required Application Materials

  • Graduate Application form via www.applytexas.org. Please note: you will use a pull-down table to select the program to which you are applying. The Executive Engineering codes use the identifier ‘Option III’, and are listed following the full-time program equivalents for ECE-Software Engineering and ECE-Integrated Circuits and Systems.
  • Official transcripts from each university or senior college attended. If you are a former UT undergraduate, transcripts will be requested for you automatically. If you are a former UT graduate student, please see ‘Special notes’, below. Transcripts may be sent to:

    Brenda Briley
    CLEE
    UT Austin
    P.O. Box H
    Austin, TX 78713-8908

  • Official GRE scores sent electronically to UT by the Educational Testing Service. The UT reporting code is 06882. The GMAT may be accepted by the Engineering Management program in lieu of the GRE.
  • TOEFL scores are required of international applicants.
  • Statement of purpose at www.applytexas.org. Please note that the application and statement of purpose are completely independent of each other even though both are accessible via the applytexas link; it is possible to complete and submit the application, and then submit the statement of purpose separately.
  • Three letters of recommendation. You may list recommenders in the application via www.applytexas.org. When you submit your application, recommenders will be contacted and a letter of recommendation requested.
  • A detailed resume including work history. You may submit your resume as an email attachment to Brenda Briley at brenda.briley@mail.utexas.edu

Special notes regarding application materials:

  • If you are a former UT graduate student, please submit the change of major application available via the following link: http://www.utexas.edu/ogs/admissions/pdf/change_of_grad_major.pdf. You must submit the transcript order form included in this packet with $10 to the UT Registrar’s Office.
  • If you are a Permanent Resident, please fill out the application for U.S. Students. No TOEFL is required.
  • Please submit your application as early in the process as possible. People you have listed as recommenders will not be contacted – and a letter of recommendation requested – until you submit your application.
  • Once your application has been received by UT, you will receive an email confirmation and provided with a UT eid and password. The eid and password will allow you to check the status of your application on line at: https://utdirect.utexas.edu/admissions/status_check.WBX.

Receiving notification of decision

The Engineering Master's Degree Programs utilizes a rolling admissions process. Applications are reviewed once complete. You will be notified by our office when your application is complete, and should receive a decision from the program admissions committee within a few weeks from that date.

Be sure to keep your contact information current with the Engineering Master's degree program office so we can keep you up-to-date on your application’s progress.

Once you are admitted, a $1000 non-refundable deposit is required to hold your place. This deposit is applied toward your initial tuition payment.
