Dropping a Course
A student may drop a course with the required approvals through the last class day of a semester or summer term. He or she receives a refund for courses dropped by the twelfth class day of a long-session semester or by the fourth class day of a summer term.
From the thirteenth through the twentieth class day of a long-session semester, and from the fifth through the tenth class day of a summer term, the student may drop a course with no academic penalty. The symbol of “Q” is recorded if the student is passing the course or a grade of “F” should be recorded if the student is failing at the time the course is dropped. Assignment of “Q” or “F” is at the instructor’s discretion.
If the student is in a warning status (academic probation) because of failure to maintain a grade point average of at least 3.00, he or she may not drop a course without the recommendation of the graduate adviser and the approval of the graduate dean. Specific deadlines for dropping a course are given in the academic calendar. Please contact the Engineering Master’s Degree Program staff for information regarding these dates.
Leave of Absence
Once the letter of withdrawal has been received by the Engineering Master’s Degree Program Office, a “Leave of Absence” (LOA) form will be completed for the student. This form permits the student to return to the University within one long semester without having to pay the $50.00 application fee for readmission. Please note that the student must complete an “Application for Readmission” in order to be readmitted to The University.
Observance of Religious Holidays
A student who is absent from a class or examination for the observance of a religious holiday may complete the work missed within a reasonable time after the absence, provided the student has notified the instructor in writing of the dates he or she will be absent. Notification must be made two weeks prior to the absence or on the first class day if the absence will occur during the first two weeks of class. In addition, the notification must be personally delivered to the instructor and signed and dated by the instructor, or sent certified mail with a return receipt request. A student who fails to complete missed work within the time allowed will be subject to the normal academic penalties.
Withdrawal from the University
Dropping an entire course load constitutes withdrawal from the University for that semester. To withdraw from any Engineering Master’s Degree Program please contact the staff for instructions regarding withdrawal requests. If a student withdraws from the program and receives a refund, he/she will be asked to return all textbooks and course materials before the refund is processed.
