Texas P.E. Continuing Education Requirements

New legislature has set a 15 hour continuing education activity requirement for all Texas Professional Engineers (P.E.’s). By March 2005, proof of continuing education activities will be required for annual license renewal.

What is required of a Texas P.E. License Holder?

  • 15 total hours of continuing education activities, including:
    • 1 hour activity in professional ethics
    • A maximum of only 5 hours activity can be from self-directed study
  • A maximum of 15 hours may be carried forward to the next year
  • Maintain record to support activity

How do Texas P.E.’s report CEUs?

At license renewal time, P.E.’s are required to submit a list of continuing education activities along with their yearly renewal form to the Texas Board of Professional Engineers (TBPE). The TBPE doesn’t require documentation at that time but does maintain the final authority to audit and review licensee’s renewal information. TBPE requests that licensees keep documentation of their continuing education activities for three years.

UT Austin’s Center for Lifelong Engineering Education Offers Solutions

Continuing Education Units (CEUs): Upon successful completion of a Center for Lifelong Engineering Education course, you will earn a specified number of Continuing Education Units (CEU), the unit of credit customarily used for continuing education courses. To meet the minimum annual continuing education activity requirement, Texas P.E.s need to earn 1.5 CEUs, including one hour (or 0.1 CEU) of professional ethics training.

Documentation: The Center for Lifelong Engineering Education provides two documents upon successful course completion: a certificate of completion and a document detailing the participant’s contact information, course title, dates attended, and amount of CEUs earned. Both documents adequately provide proof of continuing education activities by the TBPE standards.

Results-Based Training Options: The Center for Lifelong Engineering Education combines over 30 years of experience with exceptional faculty from the top 10 College of Engineering to provide quality learning experiences. The final results are dynamic training programs on the latest topics impacting your industry. Topics in the CLEE portfolio currently fall in the following discipline areas: Aerospace, Biomedical, Business Management, Chemical, Civil, Electrical & Computer, Mechanical, Petroleum, and Software.
