Dr. Schmall is Vice President and Chief Engineer for the nationally recognized specialty geotechnical contractor Moretrench. He has more than 28 years of experience related to the design and implementation of projects involving complex soils and groundwater challenges for underground construction. He was instrumental in the design and implementation of the compaction and compensation grouting program that allowed problem-free tunneling of the Northern Boulevard Crossing through complex soils beneath the water table and sensitive overhead structures, considered the most challenging aspect of the East Side Access megaproject in Queens, New York. He is the 2015 recipient of the Wallace Hayward Baker Award, established by the Geo-Institute of the American Society for Civil Engineers in recognition of the creative and innovative contributions to the field of ground modification and grouting. Dr. Schmall is a co-author of the third edition of Construction Dewatering and Groundwater Control, published in 2007, as well as a contributor to a number of industry resources on underground construction.
