BACKGROUND: In the past designers and architects daydreamed about the possibility of working with materials which could perform like living systems. Smart Materials, in parallel with the emerging field of nanotechnology, make those past dreams today's reality. These materials have the ability to perform both sensing and actuating operations, enabling structures to act like human skin, or a leaf's chlorophyll. The Smart Materials and Nanotechnology in Architecture Conference aims to analyze the fields of Smart Materials and Nanomaterials and their potential impact on architectural design and building fabrication. The end result will be an understanding of how the fields of Materials Science and Architecture can synergistically interact, be intrinsically connected, and evolve side by side into the future. In addition, participants will walk away knowing which materials can be used in future architectural designs.
